Alexia Jayy won The Voice on Tuesday night, and made show history in the process.

She became the first black female to win the show in its 29 seasons.

The 31-year-old from Mobile, Alabama, was a show favorite from the moment she stepped on the blind audition stage, turning three chairs with her performance of “A Natural Woman” by Aretha Franklin.

And she was the heavy favorite headed into Tuesday’s pre-taped season finale.

That’s because The Voice foolishly, stupidly, ridiculously eliminated Syd Millevoi — the singer best suited to go note for note with Alexia — during Monday’s semifinals.

Liv Ciara, just 16, turned in a valiant upset effort. Her Monday performance of “What a Feeling” from Flashdance was the absolute best of the season.

Liv wound up finishing second, followed by Lucas West and Mikenley Brown.

Tuesday also marked the first time fans at home did not have a say in choosing the show’s winner. Voting was done by a studio audience that included “super fans” and past contestants.

Here are Tuesday’s song by song grades:

Alexia Jayy, “Lady Marmalade” by Patti Labelle: This song is overdone on signing shows. But there’s a reason, it’s a crowd pleaser. And more in line with the songs the finalists should be picking tonight. No doubt Alexia will slay it. Did you hear how low she went? She has the vocal firepower and the sweagger to pull this off. Yep, she’s winning The Voice. There’s no question about it. Grade: A

Mikenley Brown (Team Kelly), “Almost Is Never Enough” by Ariana Grande and Nathan Sykes: Mikenley showed off some impressive vocal acrobatics on this. Good thing, because the song itself is too sleepy to make much of an impression. It’s the finale, folks, and The Voice kept serving up performances I wouldn’t listen to a second time. Grade: B–

Lucas West (Team Legend), “Cold As Ice” by Foreigner: Interesting song choice as Lucas steps out from behind the keys to rock out on a Foreigner classic. This is not well suited to his voice. And it needed a whole lot more attitude. Want good news: The guitar work was pretty good. Otherwise, that was a big whiff. Grade: D+

Liv Ciara, “The Greatest” by Billie Eilish: Regardless of who wins, Liv is the best story of Season 29. A young woman who didn’t turn a chair last season, then returned to star this spring. She’s delivering another captivating performance here. This is easily that best performance that didn’t come from Alexia on Tuesday. Very powerful. Grade: A–

Mikenley Brown (Team Kelly), “Man I Need” by Olivia Dean: Is Mike4nley fully committed to this song. It doesn’t seem like it. I mean the vocal is there. But I’m looking or a whole lot more energy, a whole lot more attitude. Nice ending from Mikenley, but that was not a finale worthy performance. Grade: C.

Lucas West (Team Legend), “Ordinary People” by John Legend: Lucas is back behind the keys. He’s delivering a fine vocal. But fine isn’t good enough tonight when every underdog needs to create moments. Lucas got to show off his range a bit, but that performance was way, way too sleepy for this moment. Blame it more on the song choice than Lucas’s ability. Grade: C+

Liv Ciara, “What a Girl Wants” by Christina Aguilera: Liv is the one contestant who has an outside chance at upsetting Alexia. She’s turning in a strong effort on this, showing off impressive energy. The vocal ranged from ethereal — did you catch that high note? — to shouty. When she misfired, I’m going to blame is on all the dancing, because she’s a heck of a singer. Grade: B–

Alexia Jayy, “One and Only” by Adele: Love that little growl in Alexia’s full rich voice. And she showed it off to great effect on this song. She also did a great job of building the song to a crescendo. If you thought she was at 10 the first time she hit the chorus, she kept building from there. I think it’s pretty clear she’s going to win The Voice. It’s also pretty clear The Voice producers want her to. They just let her kick off and end tonight’s solo performances.Grade: A–

The Voice is coming back in the Fall for season 30. Adam Levine will be a coach. I predict that it will be on Mondays only again and will have even more game show like gimmicks.

No surprise at all. Adam will be paid millions. So will the other coaches. They will give each contestant again empty, scripted platitudes. They will , once again, banter amongst each other.People (except on Idolforums and TVline) realize it’s entertainment, not a talent competition. I feel sad for the singers who give their time, energy, and talent. Nobody cares anymore, not the coaches, not that host, not the producers, not NBC. When “The Voice “ began, it was supposed to challenge “Idol” In many different ways. The show is a blown opportunity. Even this past season’s winner has already been largely forgotten. Mark is the only honest blogger about “The Voice .”
