We sure have been meeting our fair share of gals who want to sing country music on American Idol this year.
Skylar Laine, 17, of Brandon, Miss., thinks there’s something that sets her apart.
“I don’t think the average teenage girl in America has a deer in her bedroom,” she tells Idol.
She’s talking about the mounted deer’s head hanging on her wall.
Yes, she bagged the deer. She’s also into “mud riding” on a four-wheeler that looks way too big for her.
This tomboy also has a pretty interesting back-story.
Her family has owned a small grocery store in downtown Jackson, Miss., for 71 years.
But times are hard, business is off, and the family is wondering how much longer they can keep the business afloat.
If she does well on Idol, Skylar pledges to “help out with the store so we can keep it in the family forever.”
As for music, on MySpace, Skylar classifies hers as country and southern rock.
On Twitter, she describes herself thus: “I’m a country music singer/songwriter and I love to play guitar, piano,write music, and perform. I plan on recording my music and making trips to Nashville!!”
Oh, and it’s pretty clear she’s a fan of Miranda Lambert and her three-girl group “Pistol Annies.”
She even auditioned with “Hell on Heels” to deservedly rave reviews from the Idol judges.

Skylar Laine – You are the real deal- I am listing to country music again for the first time when I hear you sing- I see a real star. She stands out from the rest of the contestants. Another Rebba- she will win no question – America needs a real gal.
