Idols at awards shows, Jordin Sparks

Jordin Sparks to perform Whitney tribute tonight

0

Add Jordin Sparks to the list of former American Idol winners performing at the Billboard Music Awards tonight (8 p.m., ABC).

Jordin and John Legend will perform a tribue to Whitney Houston, who will be honored posthumously with the Billboard Millennium Award.

Jennifer Hudson performed a tribute to Whitney at the Grammys earlier this year, but the choice of Jordin this time around seems appropriate.

After all, she’s starring in “Sparkle,” Whitney’s last film, which hits theaters Aug. 17. In fact, Jordin plays Whitney’s daughter in the film. In the film, Jodin’s one of three sisters aspiring to make a career out of music.

Also performing tonight, of course, are Carrie Underwood and Kelly Clarkson. Kelly will perform her new single, “Dark Side.”

And three Idols are up for honors, including …

Best New Artist: Scotty McCreery, going up against Bad Meets Evil, Big Sean, Wiz Khalifa and Foster the People.

Best Country Album: Scotty McCreery’s “Clear As Day” going up against Jason Aldean’s “My Kinda Party,” The Band Perry’s self-titled debut album, Luke Bryans “Tailgates and Tanlines” and Lady Antebellum’s “We Own the Night.”

Best R&B album: Jennifer Hudson’s “I Remember Me” going up against Beyonce’s “4,” Mary J. Blige’s “My Life II,” Chris Brown’s “F.A.M.E.” and Rihanna’s “Talk That Talk.”

Best Christian Song: Mandisa’s “Stronger” going up against Casting Crowns’ “Glorious Days,” Jamie Grace’s “Hold Me,” Laura Story’s “Blessings,” and Matthew West’s “Strong Enough.”

Check back this evening. I’ll be posting photos throughout the show.
