Former judge trumping original Idol on the dance chart

It’s a battle of a former American Idol judge against the original Idol.

And, this week at least, the former judge won.

Kelly Clarkson scored her first number one dance hit earlier this year with “Stronger” and is going for her second with “Dark Side.”

The tune moved up from number three to number two on Billboard dance/club play chart this week. The only obstacle between it and number one, “Goin’ In” by Jennifer Lopez, with an assist from Flo Rida.

Meanwhile, “Dark Side” has advanced to number 44 among the Hot 100 singles, but still hasn’t caught the phenomenally popular “Stronger,” which sits at 38.

Other highlights on the music charts:

* As previously reported, Phillip Phillips’ “Home” got a huge boost from its Olympics exposure. So much that it not only vaulted to number one on Billboard’s download chart, from 84 to 9 on the Hot 100. “Home” sold 228,000 downloads for the week compared to 278,000 the week after he first performed the song on Idol, according to Billboard.

* Carrie Underwood’s “Blown Away” single is making a move, jumping form 24 to 20 on the country singles chart and 72 to 47 on the Hot 100.

* The soundtrack to “Sparkle” debuted at number 26 on the Billboard 200. It features the last music recorded by Whitney Houston before her death, but it’s really a Jordin Sparks’ album since she’s featured on seven of the album’s tracks.
