The latest American Idol on Broadway — Justin Guarini

Justin Guarini as Carlos in Women on the Verge of a Nervous Breakdown.Add Justin Guarini to the long list of former Idol contestants who have found work on Broadway.

Justin is playing the role of Carlos in the stage adaption of the 1988 film, “Women on the Verge of a Nervous Breakdown.”

The musical opened at the Belasco Theater on Nov. 4.

And while the show isn’t going over with the critics, Justin’s getting decent reviews.

Check it out.

New York Magazine: In a review titled “Women on the Verge not on the verge of much,” the reviewer writes: “Early American Idol pinup-tenor Justin Guarini feels a bit too safe to play the restless nebbish Carlos (the nerd-hunk role originated onscreen by Antonio Banderas), but he executes adequately and sings well.”

Washington Post: In a review titled “Woman on the Verge of a Nervous Breakdown lacks an edge,” the writer refers to Justin’s “extremely likable Broadway debut.”

Los Angeles Times: In an equally scathing review of the play, the writer refers to Justin as “captivating.”

Reuters: In a review titled “Woman on the Verge a misconceived musicalization,” the writer reports that Justin Guarini makes a promising Broadway debut in an equally thankless part.”

Which goes to show that everyone eventually gets a second chance.

I figured “From Justin to Kelly” would have pretty much ended Justin Guarini’s acting aspirations.

Here’s a link to an interview in which Justin talks about his new role and the benefit of looking nothing like Justin Guarini, the American Idol contestant, in his stage debut.
