She may have been voted off Season 13 of American Idol in 12th place.
But Emily Piriz isn’t about to give up her dream of pursuing a career in music.
In fact, after returning home to spend some time with her family and graduate high school, Emily says she plans to move to Los Angeles to do just that.
And when the first Emily Piriz album lands, listeners should expect a pop-rock vibe and “funky songs with an edge to them,” Emily said in a conference call with the media Friday afternoon.
But she also expects there will be softer songs, featuring her behind a piano.
The 18-year-old from Orlando, Fla., found herself as the low vote-getter a night after performing the Jennifer Lopez song “Let’s Get Loud” on Idol.
She got a chance to sing for a save on Thursday’s show, performing “Stars.” But Idol’s three judges opted not to save her in just the second week of the finals.
As it turns out, the second lowest finisher on Thursday’s show was Emily’s American Idol roommate M.K. Nobilette, which meant the two of them were standing side by side, center stage for a few tense moments, waiting to find out who was in danger of elimination.“She’s like, ‘It’s me. It’s me,'” Emily said of M.K. “I told her to stop saying that. When my name was called, I wasn’t surprised or shocked.”
Nor was she shocked that the judges didn’t save her, realizing they’ll likely wait to use their only save until later in the season.
As for singing a J-Lo song to J-Lo … well, Jennifer really liked it, even if the reviews were mixed from Idol’s other two judges.
“I don’t regret singing that song,” she said. “It means home to me. (I) probably (needed to do) what Harry said and bring even more energy to the stage.”
Her advice to other aspiring singers: Never give up.
Emily says she started trying out for TV shows when she was 13. She auditioned for The Voice three or four times, for The X Factor three times, for Idol twice and for America’s Got Talent multiple times.
“Idol to me is as good as it gets,” she said. “It’s the original. Everybody is a huge family and they treat us like family. It’s amazing.”
