Garrett’s optic nerves never developed, so he was born blind in his right eye and with only 10 percent vision in his left.
That hasn’t stopped him from pursuing his aspirations of becoming a country singer. He’s says he’s been singing all his life and, according to his Facebook bio, he taught himself to play guitar by feel and ear when he was 10 years old.
His father, Mike, has helped out, too, serving as Garrett’s roadie whenever he performs. He also accompanied him into the American Idol audition room, standing by nervously as his quite confident son impressed the judges with a fine rendition of “Proud Mary.”
Heck, the 25-year-old from Phenix City, Ala., even got to sing a snippet of Jennifer Lopez’s “Como La Flor” in Spanish. Jennifer even joined in for part of the song.
Keith Urban praised Garrett for his style and his original sound. And Garrett breezed into the Hollywood round with three yes votes from the judges.
On his website and Facebook, we learn that Garrett has been doing this for a while now.
He’s opened for Blake Shelton, George Jones, B.J. Thomas, Ray Price, and The Platters.
And back in 2012, he released an album called “Country Classics” that includes excellent covers of old country standards like “When the Last Teardrop Falls” and “Why Me.”
The album also features two originals — a tribute to service men called “Unseen Soldier” and a fun tune called “She’s Holdin’ On, I’m Lettin’ Go.” The album is available here and should be available through iTunes in the near future.
“I’ve always said, bring back the country to country,” Garrett says in a YouTube promo video.
As for where he got his talent … well, he told the Idol judges it didn’t come from his family.
“My family can’t sing a note or play a note. I don’t know where my talent came from, except Gold almighty,” Garrett said.
