“Seeing Jennifer (Hudson) and Miley (Cyrus) — both artists I look up to — turning and believing in me is a moment I’ll never forget,” she told Voice Views.
“The advice, encouragements, and what they saw in me reminded me to give more value to myself and the voice I’ve been given.”
And talk about a great sport.
The 27-year-old’s run on The Voice ended in the battle round when Jennifer declared Davon Fleming the winner after their performance of “I’m Your Baby Tonight” by Whitney Houston.
But here’s what Maharasyi wrote about that on Facebook: “Davon Fleming is a true star and a true sweetheart. He deserved this one!”
Maharasyi, you’ll recall, is the young woman whose family is from Indonesia and who spent most of her childhood there. She decided to follow in the footsteps of her aunt, Emilia Contessa, an Indonesian pop star, and recorded music for a record label there before moving back to Los Angeles.
She also had the distinction of playing a role in “Yasmine: A Final Fist,” one of the first commercial films ever made in the small, oil-rich nation of Brunei.
Here’s what else Maharasyi told Voice Views about her time on the show and her career moving forward.
Voice Views: I know the battles were filmed a while back. What have you been doing musically since then?
Maharasyi: Since the battle rounds I’ve been focusing on my personal music. I’ve written a few new songs and am working to solidify the style I’m going for.”
Voice Views: Where do you see The Voice experience taking you musically?
Maharasyi: I’m not sure where it will take me but The Voice helped me gain new followers. These followers have been so supportive since the first episode so the plan is to continue to let them be a part of my musical journey and share with them my work as an artist.
Voice Views: You released a 3-song pop EP earlier this year (I love, “Put Me Out,” by the way). Any plans to release more music in the near future? If so, how do you think it will compare with the music on that EP?
Maharasyi: Oh wow. Thanks so much! That was actually an EP that I decided to “secretly” release. I thought I’d place it on iTunes mostly for content when people search for me and possibly using them for TV placements, but basically towards the end of creating that EP I had a change of idea on where I wanted to go stylistically.
Now the songs that I’ve been writing have a way more R&B approach to them. I’ve been getting my writing inspiration from artists like Sinead Harnett, Kehlani, and Kenyon Dixon.
Voice Views: You’ve done some acting in the past as well. Do you have any other endeavors along those lines underway?
Maharasyi: I’ve put acting in the back burner since coming back to the states to focus on my music, but I’ve actually been itching to get back into it for a while now. Acting in the U.S would be a whole new experience. I’d love to see what the acting world is like out here. I began my search just this pass month. Hope the stars align for me!
Voice Views: Do you think you grew as an artist on The Voice? If so, in what way?
Maharasyi: Singing alongside Davon Fleming and being coached by JHud, you can’t help but grow. Jennifer is a phenomenal singer and she gave me a lot of tips and tricks on how to make hitting those notes a little easier.
Even though Jhud, Davon, and I are stylistically different types of soulful singers, I definitely apply what I learned from them and that has helped me grow. Aside from the technical stuff, the love from Jhud and Davon helped me believe in myself more as an artist.
