For the first time Monday night, ABC’s new American Idol went head-to-head with The Voice.
The Voice won. Big time.
Idol dropped 2 million viewers from its opening night premiere and saw its rating among 18 to 49 years olds plummet from 2.4 to 1.8.
As for The Voice, it had one of its best nights of Season 14.
The fifth round of the blind auditions attracted 11.72 million viewers — 40 percent more than American Idol’s 8.36 million.
That’s The Voice’s second largest audience yet in Season 14, bested only by the 12.3 million who watched the season premiere.
The Voice’s rating among 18-49 years olds — 2.4. That’s pretty consistent with what the show has been drawing throughout Season 14.
American Idol did finish second on the night behind The Voice, besting Big Bang Theory on CBS and Lucifer on FOX.
Of course, this is only round one. The Voice and American Idol will continue to go head to head for the next six weeks.
