One’s a fixture at this awards show; the other isn’t.
But between now and June 7, you have a chance to vote for Carrie Underwood and Kelly Clarkson for CMT Music Awards.
Of course, Kelly’s got a nomination because of that splendid “Don’t You Want to Stay” duet with Jason Aldean, which climbed all the way to number one on the country music charts.
It would mark her first CMT award. If the duo can get past competition that includes “Collide” by Sheryl Crow and Kid Rock; “That Should be Me” by Justin Bieber, featuring Rascal Flatts; “Country Boy” by Aaron Lewis, featuring George Jones and Charlie Daniels; and “Coal Miner’s Daughter” by Loretta Lynn, Miranda Lambert and Sheryl Crow.
Those four songs and the Kelly-Jason duet are up for the honor of collaborative video of the year.
Carrie, meanwhile, is nominated for two CMT Awards, Female Video of the Year and Video of the Year, both for “Undo It.”
In the former category, her competition include “Mine” by Taylor Swift; “Turn on the Radio” by Reba McEntire; “The House that Built Me” by Miranda Lambert; and “A Little Bit Stronger” by Sara Evans.
In the latter, there are 10 nominees, including “My Kinda Party,” Jason Aldean; “The Boys of Fall, Kenny Chesney; “Hello World,” Lady Antebellum; “The House that Built Me,” Miranda Lambert; “Why Wait,” Rascal Flatts; “Stuck Like Glue,” Sugarland; “Mine,” Taylor Swift; “If I Die Young,” The Band Perry; “Colder Weather,” Zac Brown Band.
The field will be narrowed to five after the CMT Awards begin at 8 p.m. June 8 on CMT. Voting for Video of the Year will continue during the show.
Carrie has two Video of the Year awards to her credit, last year for “Cowboy Casanova” and in 2007 for “Before He Cheats.” She also won the CMT Award for Performance of the Year in 2010 for “Temporary Home.”
Back to Kelly for a moment. If you hadn’t heard, the duet with Jason Aldean will hardly be her last.
Singer-songwriter Richard Marx told an interviewer last week that she has recorded a song he helped write with none other than season five Idol contestant Chris Daughtry.
The song, “One More Yesterday,” could be included on her upcoming album, due out in September.
