His latest album, “Digital Vein,” couldn’t match that feat.
But considering it was released independently, its chart performance is pretty darn impressive.
The album landed at number 35 on the Billboard 200. And at number four on Billboard’s pop albums chart.
David partly funded the album through a Pledge Music campaign.
Scott Graves, head of talent relations at PledgeMusic, called it “one of our most fascinating and successful campaigns on the site to date” and labeled the chart performance as “truly thrilling.”
What’s thrilling is the new music David delivered. He was so well known for his unique arrangements of the well-known songs he covered en route to winning Season 7 of American Idol, that I’ve always through he was underrated in terms of his vocal prowess.
If you have checked out “Digital Vein,” you can listen to full-length versions of the songs on the base album on David’s YouTube channel.
Standout tracks include lead single “Criminals,” “Kiss and Tell,” album-opening “Heartbeat,” the ballad “Carry You” and David’s cover of Chris Isaak’s “Wicked Game.”
David recently released the music video for “Criminals,” which he describes as a Bonnie and Clyde, us-against-the-world type of tune.
And, of course, he’s touring in support of the new album. The “Digital Vein” tour opened last week with shows in Phoenix and San Diego, and David will be performing in Los Angeles tonight (Oct. 4).
David will be making three stops in this general area, as follows:
* He will be performing an acoustic show at Ram’s Head on Stage in Annapolis, Md., on Monday, Nov. 2. Tickets are $29.50.
* The next night, David will perform at The Hamilton in Washington, D.C. Tickets range from $17.50 to $27.50.
* On Tuesday, Nov. 10, the Digital Vein tour will stop in Bethlehem, Pa., as part of Musikfest. David will play at Steel Stacks. Tickets range from $22 to $32.
Here’s some other chart news of note:
* Melanie Martinez from Season 3 of The Voice is still hanging tough on the Billboard 200 at number 57. Her “Cry Baby” album has been on the chart for six weeks now.
* With her new album due out later this month, Carrie Underwood is still at number 108 on the Billboard 200 with her Greatest Hits: Decade #1″ album. It’s been on the chart for 42 weeks.
* Adam Lambert’s “Original High” has been on the chart for 15 weeks, but this might be its last. It tumbled from 179 to 195 on the most recent Billboard 200.
* And I suppose that was a giant yawn from music fans toward Katharine McPhee’s new album, “Hysteria.” It failed to crack the Billboard 200.
