The best singing show on television just got better by subtraction.
Cee Lo Green announced on the Ellen DeGeneres show that he will not be returning to The Voice.
Not in the fall. Apparently, not at all.
“I don’t want to wear out my welcome there,” Cee Lo told Ellen. “I have so many other things that I want to do.”
He noted that he hasn’t released an album in four years, but said he’s close to finishing one.
Truth be told, Cee Lo was the weakest of the six coaches we’ve seen on The Voice.
He put up the least fight for contestants. Sometimes, he seemed a bit disinterested in the proceedings.
And his performance seemed to falter in Season 5, when he wound up with a pair of top-flight female singers on his team in Kat Robichaud and Caroline Pennell.
Kat’s momentum was stopped dead in its tracks by a performance of “She Keeps Me Warm,” an odd song choice if ever there was one.
Then there was a strange on-air discussion of song choice with Caroline that seemed to undercut her performance of “Leaving on a Jet Plane,” something that never happens between a contestant and a coach on The Voice.
All that said, I’ll forever remember Cee Lo for planting those enormous black wings on Juliet Simms’ shoulders back in Season 2.
The Voice returns Monday night, with Shakira and Usher on the coaching panel. Check back then. I’ll be living blogging, as always.
