David Cook will star in Kinky Boots this spring.

Here’s a bit of a surprise, in a couple of ways.

David Cook, one of the most popular American Idol champs, is heading to Broadway.

And he’s doing it in a show called “Kinky Boots.”

I mean, check out that photo at right. It’s probably not the image of David Cook most of his fans expected.

David will play the role of Charlie Price in “Kinky Boots” nearly every night from April 3 through early May.

If you’re not familiar with the story, Charlie is a struggling factory owner who meets an entertainer named Lola who’s very much his opposite.

But they team up, as business partners and friends.

“I’ve had conversations about finding creative outlets outside of being a musician, but the timing was never right,” David says on his revamped website.

“I am honored I am going to be part of this show and get to work with so many amazing people. I love the collaborative aspect of theater too, the idea of being part of a creative team and working it out in front of an audience each night.”

The show is playing at The Al Hirschfeld Theatre. Oh, and it features 16 songs by Cyndi Lauper.

The announcement of David’s role in the show comes at the same time he’s releasing his latest major music project, the EP “Chromance.”
