David Cook released his first single in nearly two years Friday, “Reds Turn Blue.”
It’s a song about his struggles with anxiety since winning Season 7 of American Idol, the 37-year-old says.
“I feel like the color red … has always represented love to me. And (blue), well, obviously, the idea of having the blues,” he told People.
“I’ve always kind of felt like my anxiety does that for me, it turns these positive things into negative a little bit.”
The song was written last October, David told Vents Magazine, adding that he was diagnosed with anxiety disorder a couple of years after appearing on Idol.
“The song is really a letter from my anxiety to me. Making it the ‘other’ has honestly helped me navigate my relationship with it.”
Saturday evening, more than 24 hours after its release, the song was still in the Top 10 on Apple Music’s rock singles chart.
Right now, David is planning to return to the road in late August, but the pandemic will have the final say in whether that happens or not.
He has a series of acoustic shows scheduled in Europe with Season 8 Idol champ Kris Allen.
