Fantasia breaks out of her box with a new county single

Fantasia has released a new country single, "Ugly"On the American Idol red carpet, Fantasia said she’s tired of being kept in a box musically.

So she’s breaking out, promising a rock-soul explosion.

Okay, maybe with an exception. Case in point: “Ugly,” her new country single.

Wow. What a single? Fantasia sounds amazing, of course, on the country ballad. You can check out the official audio below.

“Rock-soul is all types of sounds,” Fantasia tweeted earlier this week. “Go with me while I go country for a sec. When you love music.. you love it all.”

She sang just a snippet of the song on the Idol finale. It’s already in the Top 20 on the iTunes R&B singles chart.

“Ugly” is the second single off Fantasia’s upcoming album. There’s no release date yet, but the Season 3 Idol champ told Billboard it should be ready soon.

The lead single, “No Time for It,” reached number six on the Billboard adult R&B singles chart.

Oh, and “Ugly” has a Voice connection, too. It was written by Audra Mae and Nicolle Galyon, a Season 2 contestant. Nicolle also co-wrote some of the best tracks on Miranda Lambert’s superb “Platinum” album.

Meanwhile, if you’d like to catch Fantasia live, she’ll be performing in the area several times over the next few months with shows at the Pier Six Pavilion in Baltimore (April 30 and June 5), D.C.’s DAR Constitution Hall (May 6 and May 7) and The Mann at Fairmount Park in Philly (June 3).

Head to Fantasia’s website for ticket information.

Meanwhile, here’s the promised audio for “Ugly.”
