Jax from American Idol Season 14 released her debut EP Friday.

Jax, from American Idol Season 14, released her debut EP Friday.

Given all that Jax has been through since Season 14 of American Idol, the title of her debut EP is a bit surprising.

After all, there’s nothing very funny about a singer being diagnosed with thyroid cancer and having to worry that it’s going to steal her voice.

But Jax conquered cancer; she even ran the New York Marathon in early November to celebrate the feat.

And on Friday, she released her first major project since Idol, a six-track EP called “Funny.”

“Funny” is one of the new songs released Friday; two of the six tracks from the album — “Stars” and “Kickin’ and Screamin'” were previously available for download.

“Funny” celebrates the qualities of an immature, cheating lover — in a totally tongue in cheek sort of way.

“I think that ‘Funny’ pretty much captures the dramatic sarcastic overtone that the whole EP has,” Jax told Celeb Mix in explaining the EP’s title.

“‘Funny’ was basically the emotional vibe of the EP. As a songwriter a lot of it was lyrically Alanis Morissette inspired. I think that ‘Funny’ is kind of the clever track of the EP.”

Jax had a hand in writing all six songs and earlier referred to the EP as “confused pop” because its wide range of songs.

She celebrates triumph over adversity in “Stars.” One of the best of the new tunes released Friday is “LSD,” about an addiction to a toxic relationship. Perhaps more addictive is another kiss-off song, “Sleep Like a Baby.”

One of the most impassioned vocals comes on the haunting “Wrong Girl,” in which Jax promises to “completely destroy” a guy “who messed with the wrong girl.”

Confused pop or not, the EP was striking a chord with fans. Just check out the comments on Jax’s Facebook page and Twitter feed.

And as of 8 a.m. Friday morning, the EP was number nine on iTunes pop albums chart and number 47 overall.
