Joana Martinez was just 15 when she auditioned for The Voice and turned three chairs with her cover of “Call Out My Name” by The Weeknd.
And the teen from Miami continued to win praise during the competition for her big vocals and her skilled-beyond-her-year performances.
Joana didn’t quite live up to “The Most Likely to Win The Voice” honor she received at eighth grade prom at Miami Arts Studio magnet school.
But she made it all the way to the Top 10 and worked with star coaches Blake Shelton and Gwen Stefani along the way.
And she was invited back to perform in Tuesday’s Season 17 finale, singing with Myracle Holloway and fellow teens Hello Sunday.
Here’s what Joana told Voice Views about her time on the show and her future in music.
Voice Views: What do you consider your biggest takeaway / lesson learned from The Voice experience?
Joana: My biggest takeaway is that I have grown so much as a performer and an artist. I’m an introvert at heart, and like everyone, I have always had my insecurities. One of them was moving around on stage. The show challenged me to step out of my comfort zone, and I have learned to be natural, free and overall more confident on stage.
Voice Views: Which was your favorite Voice performance and why?
Joana: All of my performances were so different, but I’d say my favorite performance was probably “Dreaming of You.” I was happy to be able to perform a song that the fans wanted to hear me sing.
Voice Views: What are you post-Voice plans musically? Where are you hoping this opportunity leads?
Joana: I hope this opportunity opens new doors. I am hoping to record original music and to continue performing and growing.
Voice Views: Do you have plans to release new music? If so, what can you tell us about that.
Joana: I do plan to release new music and hopefully will do so soon! I am working on new things as we speak and am looking forward to sharing it!
Voice Views: Is there anything else you’d like to add about The Voice experience?
Joana: I am blessed to have had the opportunity to be on The Voice. I got to work with some incredibly talented people. From the band, to The Voice vocal coach Trelawny, to wardrobe, and hair and makeup! They were all a joy to work with and made the experience 10 times better because not only are they talented, they’re also very kind people. I am also very grateful for all the fans who supported me and cheered me on along this journey. I’ll never forget my time on the show.
