Joei Fulco was one of the victors during the first week of battle round matches on The Voice.
Blake Shelton declared her as the singer who would advance following a duet of Tina Turner’s “The Best” with Todd Michael Hall.
Actually, both singers received praise for their performances. Blake ultimately decided to save Todd Michael so that he would avoid elimination as well.
Here’s what Joei, 22, of Lancaster, Calif., told Voice Views about her battle round experience.
Voice Views: What do you think was the key to your success in the battle round?
Joei: I think the key to the success was just having fun. Todd and I worked endlessly on our performance and really put in the time so, when it came time to actually battle, all we had to do was enjoy ourselves and take in the moment!
Voice Views: How did the song choice work for you? Did it pose any special challenges?
Joei: I had never heard this song before and I didn’t have a lot of time to learn it, which was the biggest challenge. This wasn’t really a song that fit into my wheelhouse or that I was used to singing so I had to step out of my comfort zone with it and try to make it my own.
Voice Views: Thanks to your experience with your family band, I assume you’re used to singing with others or performing duets. Is that the case? And, if so, do you think that worked to your advantage in preparing for the battle?
Joei: I definitely felt comfortable performing a duet given my experience in my family band! I’m so used to playing off other people onstage so I think that aspect made me feel a lot more comfortable with the performance.

Voice Views: Anything else you’d like to add about the battle round experience?
Joei: I just want to add how blessed and honored I feel for Blake’s belief in me! I can’t thank him enough for his continued belief in me! I also want to add how amazing it was to work with Todd! He was an amazing battle partner and we had so much fun performing together!
Voice Views: And, obviously, you can’t talk about song choice, but is there a side of your artistry you haven’t gotten to display yet that you hope to in coming rounds?
Joei: In the coming rounds I would love to show off more of my country side! I have such a love of country music and I would love to do an country/country-rock classic!
