Jonny Gray launches KickStarter to fund new album

OK, I’m not sure of the name of the song Jonny Gray sings in his KickStarter video.

“Promises Broke,” perhaps?

I just know it sounds like something I’d love to download.

Let’s back up.

Jonny, a Season 5 contestant from The Voice, launched his KickStarter campaign Monday.

His goal: $30,000 in 30 days.

“After The Voice, some people get record deals, and some people just have to go and make a record,” Jonny says.

“This is a project that I’ve been wanting to do for a long time,” he adds. “I’ve never had a real record per se. I made an acoustic record, but nothing like this.”

That acoustic record would have been a “Sail It Away” EP, released in January 2011, pre-dating Jonny’s appearance on The Voice.

For those who don’t remember, Jonny is the Air Force veteran from Austin, Texas, who was 29 when he auditioned for the show and wound up on Team Cee Lo.

He made it all the way to the Top 12 before being eliminated on the same night as Josh Logan.

Head to Jonny’s KickStarter campaign, and you’ll see all sorts of special offers folks can receive for contributing to the cause.

For instance, a $15 contribution will get you a physical copy of the album. As little as $100 will get you a Skype or Google Hangout chat with Jonny.

And if the clip below isn’t enough to convince you the album will be worth hearing, head to Jonny’s Facebook page, like it, then listen to more of his original music.

Editor’s note: Followers of The Voice will notice a couple of new features in this blog. Go to the blue bar at top, click on The Voice and you’ll find a list of all the singers who have landed on teams through Season 5. The links, in most cases, lead you to a bio of each singer. Click on “After The Voice,” and you’ll find a rundown of the music past contestants have released since they appeared on the show, through the end of 2013. If I missed anything, let me know. I’m also now tweeting Voice related items under a Voice specific Twitter account — aptly called VoiceViews — for those of you who don’t follow that other singing show. Live blogging for Season 6 starts Monday.
