And fans are likely to be a bit surprised when they listen to Jordan Smith’s “Only Love.”
Oh, the voice that made Jordan an instant favorite on The Voice is in fine form, of course.
But this 12-song collection is much more pop-oriented — even dance-inducing at times — and younger sounding.
That’s especially true on tracks like “Lonely Eyes,” “Burn It All Down,” “Box” and the soulful “Feel Good.”
And that was the intention, Jordan told his hometown LexGo.com.
“I have a lot of fans from all different walks of life, all different ages,” he told the site. “But ultimately, I am a young guy, and this album has definitely taken on a younger, more current sound, in my opinion, because of that searching that I did, because of that process of figuring out who I was and realizing that was part of it.”
RedOne produced the album, Jordan’s third under his contract with Republic Records. And Jordan co-wrote six of the 12 tracks after having just one co-write on his 2016 debut album, “Something Beautiful.”
Of course, that album was basically an extension of The Voice version of Jordan Smith and found him covering “You Are So Beautiful,” “Over the Rainbow” and “Amazing Grace.”
It was also the most successful post-Voice album ever in terms of its Billboard debut, landing at number two on the Billboard 200.
“Only Love” — that’s also the title of Jordan’s new single — was sitting at number 20 on the iTunes albums chart 12 hours after its release.
Jordan told LexGo.com that “Something Beautiful” was created in the post-Voice whirlwind, where getting an album out quickly to capitalize on his success on the show was a key consideration. In fact, the album landed just three months after his victory in Season 9.
“With this one, it was really important for me to step away and really define who I was as an artist, as a songwriter, as a musician, because I don’t really feel like I’ve had a chance to do that, yet,” he said.
