She was asked to sing Patsy Cline’s “She’s Got You.” And the young singer-songwriter from New Jersey was paired up with country singer Charity Bowden.
For Josette, it was pretty much a case of: Patsy who?
The teenager says she doesn’t sing country music often and admits “I didn’t even know who Patsy was until battle rounds.”
Still, she managed to advance to the knockouts when coach Miley Cyrus selected her as the winner of a battle round match that was montaged during Tuesday’s show, meaning we saw just a couple of seconds of it.
Josette said Charity — who she describes as a “beautiful country singer” — helped her learn “She’s Got You.” And Josette said she came to appreciate the song.
“It’s a beautiful old country song,” Josette said during a conference call with the media. “Definitely something I would have never chosen for myself. But it’s definitely one with my vibe and my singing type.
“I loved working with Charity. We did become really close friends. So having her leave (the show) was very rough.”
You might remember Josette as the very last contestant to earn a spot on Season 11 of The Voice. She was 17 when she auditioned. She’s the Cresskill High School student who teaches guitar lessons in her spare time.
She said she appreciates how Miley encourages the singers on her team to “stay true to ourselves but at the same time step out of our comfort zone.”
Obviously, the battle round song choice forced Josette to do the latter.
As for the former? In the very short clip The Voice showed of the battle, you’ll notice that Josette was playing acoustic guitar.
“I was planning on not playing guitar because I wanted to focus on my vocals,” Josette said. “But (Miley) suggested I play guitar because she knows that’s my thing. She really pushed me to play guitar and I’m glad that I did. It worked out perfectly.”
