Once upon a time, Adam Levine was the king of the four-chair turn on The Voice.
If a singer turned four chairs, they seemed to land on Team Adam more often than not.
That hasn’t been as true lately. In fact, entering Tuesday’s fourth blind audition episode, Adam was the only coach who had yet to reel in a four-chair turn recipient.
He fixed that by the end of the show with a wise strategic move, explaining how he would help L.B. Crew with his falsetto.
L.B. Crew liked what he heard, and joined Team Adam.
Here’s a recap of Tuesday’s show. Following the links will take you to more information on the singers.
BEST OF THE NIGHT
L.B. Crew, 29, Little Rock, Ark.
The song: “Waves”
Chair turns: An opening that immediately showed off L.B.’s range prompted quick chair turns from Kelly and Blake. John joined them midway through the performance and Adam eventually turned as well. And that made L.B. the fifth four-chair turn artist of Season 16.
Feedback: Kelly complimented L.B. on a “cool, sexy” performance. John said his ability is “right up there” with the best people we’ve heard. Blake praised his charisma.
The outcome: L.B. decided to join Team Adam Levine after Adam promised to help him improve his falsetto.
RUNNER-UP
Kendra Checketts, 19, San Diego, Calif.
The song: “Sober”
Chair turns: She got an almost immediate chair turn from Blake Shelton. This young lady has a powerful voice. And hit one heck of a glory note near the end of the song. And no one else turned, which is shocking considering she’s more pop than country and I thought that was a solid audition.
The feeback: Blake said he’s excited to have a chance to coach Kendra. Given the song choice, Kelly said she wanted to hear more ache during the performance.
The outcome: She automatically became a member of Team Blake.
ALSO MADE THE SHOW
Betsy Ade, 40, Kenosha, Wisc.
The song: “Hunger”
Chair turns: She was well into her performance when John Legend turned, followed by Adam Levine. Had they been watching the entire time, they would have seen an impressive performance full of passion and absent of any of the stage fright that has been evident among some of the Season 16 auditioners.
The feedback: Adam called her “amazing.” John praised her power, energy and the charisma that was evident once he did turn.
The outcome: Betsy decided to join Team John.
Dalton Dover, 20, Marietta, Ga.
The song: “Don’t Close Your Eyes”
Chair turns: Dalton displayed a nice ache in his voice early in the performance. And it didn’t take long for him to coax a chair turn from Blake. He winds up being the only chair turn, something that shocks Blake. “What are you doing?” he asked his fellow coaches, before proclaiming “this is awesome.”
The feedback: John complimented his rich tone. Blake called him one of the best country singers The Voice has heard so far in Season 16.
The outcome: Since Blake was the only chair turn, Dalton automatically became a member of Team Blake.
Rebecca Howell, 18, Cochran, Ga.
The song: “The Night the Lights Went Down in Georgia”
Chair turns; From the first note on, Rebecca showed off a very nice country tone. Kelly turned almost instantly. Blake followed quickly. By the time Rebecca finished a very impressive audition, she had John Legend facing her as well.
The feedback: John said she sounded “fantastic” and made smart musical choices. Kelly compared her to Lee Ann Womack.
The outcome: Rebecca shocked Kelly by joining her team and not Team Blake.
NO CHAIR TURNS
J.T. Rodriguez, 23, Chattanooga, Tenn.
The song: “Higher Love”
Chair turns: J.T. put his own spin on the song, but also sucked a lot of the energy out of the pop hit. He also seemed a bit nervous. The end result: No one turned.
Feedback: John complimented him on a unique tone, but said he also seemed unsure at times. The coaches also thought he sounded much older than he is.
The outcome: No one turned for J.T., but he’ll have a second shot on the show’s Comeback Stage. Bebe Rexha says he has the potential to be a star.
