Lauren Alaina lands at #5 on Billboard 200

Lauren Alaina’s debut album “Wildflower” landed on the Billboard 200 for the first time this week, checking in at a respectable number five.

That’s much better than a year ago, when Idol runner-up Crystal Bowersox’s album debuted at number 28 on the Billboard 200.

But as I said last week when Scotty McCreery’s album first landed on the Billboard 200, timing, sometimes, is everything.

The albums from Idol finalists used to be released in the heat of the holiday shopping season.  By moving this year’s releases up by at least a month, 19 Entertainment and Interscope Records has avoided such fierce competition on the charts.

And previous albums from runner-ups have done better.  To date, Clay Aiken remains the only Idol runner-up to have his post-Idol debut land at number one on the Billboard 200.  That happened after season two, of course.

Katherine McPhee from season six and David Archuleta from season seven had their first albums debut at number two; Adam Lambert’s “For Your Entertainment” entered the Billboard 200 at number three two years ago; and the underrated Bo Bice debuted at number four after season four.

All that said, Lauren Alaina put together a fine album, better I think, than Scotty’s.  For the Idol Chatter review, go here.

As for Scotty, his album landed at number one last week.  He became the first Idol winner to accomplish that feat since Ruben Studdard after season two.

This week, Scotty’s “Clear As Day” gets bumped down to number four.  Landing in front of him — Evanescence at number one, followed by “21” from Adele and “American Capitalist” from Five Finger Death Punch.

Clay Aiken’s CD not only debuted at #1 but was #1 for 2 weeks. Clay’s CD was also released in October and he holds the record for highest first week sales of an Idol album of any kind. No album, debut or later, by any idol has topped Clay’s 613,000 the first week.

You have got to be kidding…Alaina’s album better than Scottys…don’t think so and apparently neither does most of America…did she really hit #5 on BB200, if so it was no more than the first wk and she dropped off the top 50 as soon as she hit it…Scotty on the other hand hit at #1 and has stayed in top 20 for over 7 since debut…Lauren is not as personally liked as McCreery and doesn’t begin to have it factor…of Underwood, McBride Lambert the true class acts of female country singers..Her album sales reflect accurate measure of her staying power. Do agree w/other post as Clay Aiken also exceptional talent…without AI’s judge’s promo of Lauren (for what reason,I’ll never understand) she’d never be heard from again.
