Jane Carrey, Season 11

Meet Hollywood bound Jane Carrey

1

First we learn that the sweet, demure young lady auditioning for American Idol has been “singing for as long as I remember.”

Then we learn she’s a “huge ham” who loves “being on stage.”

Finally, we find out her name is Jane Carrey, daughter of comedian Jim Carrey, and it all makes so much more sense.

Yep, Jane Carrey is Hollywood bound on American Idol after performing “Something to Talk About” for the judges in San Diego. They voted unanimously to grant her a golden ticket.  Randy Jackson said he likes her “potential.”  Jennifer Lopez suggested she work on “connecting with an audience” and complimented her on “a pretty voice.”

But Jane, 26, of Los Angeles has indeed been singing for some time, even if Idol’s blue bar identified her as a waitress.

She’s been performing with the Jane Carrey band since at least mid-2007.  The band released a 14-track album in 2009 that’s still available on iTunes and includes tunes like “Sexy Man in a Death Metal Band.”

According to the band’s Facebook page, the band formed when Jane was attending the Crossroads School for Arts and Sciences in Santa Monica, Calif., for its jazz program and met drummer Terry Goldberg and bassist Ian Sloane.  The four-member band also includes George Krikes and classifies its music as alternative rock.

You can listen to 10 of the songs from that album on the band’s MySpace page.

In her golden ticket interview, we learn that Jane first took the stage as Mary in a Christmas play in fourth grade and that she’s used to writing all her own music, though she just started co-writing songs and has enjoyed that process as well.

As for trying to make a mark as the daughter of a famous actor … well, she addressed that issue on the show.

“It is difficult growing up in the shadow of something and trying to find your place in the world underneath this huge shadow,” she said. “I think that’s also why I’m here … to make my place in the world.”
