A 17-year-old from Baldwin, N.Y., Melanie Martinez is skilled in photography as well as music and tells The Voice she’s always been the one who didn’t look like everyone else.
With her two-toned hair adorned by a big red bow, she still doesn’t.
As a singer, she thinks she’s good at interpreting songs in different ways.
Then she proves just that, singing Britney Spears’ “Toxic” while playing her acoustic guitar.
Oh, and a tambourine, which she plays with her feet while singing.
Adam and Blake turned their chairs around soon after she started singing and were later joined by Cee Lo.
Blake told her he thinks “she’s a star,” with a unique sound and look. But she chose Adam, giving him one of the most interesting contestants we’ve met.
What the show didn’t show: The Baldwin High student tells Long Island Newsday that she’s performed only a few live shows and plans to be home-schooled during her senior year so she can focus on the singing competition. Which she almost didn’t make because her car broke down on the day of open calls. “I had to hitchhike for a taxi. Thank God there was this one sweet girl who let me in her taxi!” she writes in her Voice blog. “Oh Comely — Neutral Milk Hotel” is her comfort song. Not that she doesn’t have several of her own, plus lots of covers you can hear on her YouTube channel.
Update: Another three-chair turn-around performer from the blind auditions, Melanie wowed the judges that night by performing two instruments and singing “Toxic.” She was matched with another unique vocalist in the battle round, but defeated Caitlin Michele when they performed Ellie Goulding’s “Lights.” In the knockout round, she sang “Bulletproof” to defeat Sam James. But she needed Adam’s save after her version of “Hit the Road Jack” in the live playoffs. Her Top 12 performance of “Cough Syrup” was 61 on the iTunes singles chart the next day, the fifth best among The Voice performances.
