Idol returns to ABC on Sunday, Feb. 18 with the judging trio of Katy Perry, Lionel Richie and Luke Bryan back intact.
Here’s more about Will.
* He’s a country singer-songwriter and guitarist from Hazlehurst, Ga., who’s already released music.
* That said, he’s relatively new to music. His first performance was a little less than three years ago.
* In an interview with Caution Light Media, Will explains that he received a scholarship to play Division III football in Knoxville, Tenn.
* Part way through his second year there, he decided he’d had enough and it was time to return home to Georgia.
* But he had a three or four-month window before he could make the move. During that time, he committed himself to learning guitar, something he’d dabbled with earlier in his college days without a lot of success.
* This time turned out differently. “Every waking moment I wasn’t busy, that’s what I was doing, playing guitar. It’s the only thing I’ve ever done in my life that I was this passionate about. I truly just love sitting down with a guitar and writing a song.”
* He still finished his education — at the advice of his parents and others — earning a degree in biology from Georgia Southern University.
* But he also committed himself to music, and a peek at his show schedule shows he gained lots of performing experience in a short period of time.
* In 2023, he also started releasing music, to the tune of four singles so far, showing off warm, deep country vocals on the “Coming Down,” “Fishing for a Living,” “Gone for Good” and “Somewhere in the Middle.” Check out a snippet of the superb “Coming Down” below.
* The latter — featuring co-writer Nate Baker — is also especially impressive, inspired by a conversation with a military veteran who said while he was happy to be back with his family, part of him “felt like he should still be (overseas) serving.” Hence, the song’s title, “Somewhere in the Middle.”
* Will’s audition must have went pretty well. In mid-January, American Idol planned to show up at a special hometown performance at the Snipesville Community Center.
