At 5 p.m. Monday, Melanie dropped the official video for the title track from her “Cry Baby.”
It comes complete with a doctor wearing a rabbit’s head and a mother who complains, “Oh, no, she’s a cry baby,” when presented with her newborn daughter.
And it’s also attracted 1.7 million views on YouTube in the two days since it’s been released.
Pretty impressive, right?
More impressive is the fact that Melanie once again conceived and directed the video, just as she did with her videos for four other songs from the album — “Sippy Cup,” “Pitty Party,” “Soap” and “Training Wheels.” The last two were released as a “double-feature” in November.
Writes one fan on YouTube: “Melanie should make a movie about cry baby! It could be horror and it would be so good!”
So good would also describe the success Melanie is enjoying after appearing on The Voice in Season 3 and finishing in the Top 6.
When released last year, her “Cry Baby” album debuted at number six on the Billboard 200, the best showing ever for a post-show album from a Voice contestant.
In an interview last week with the St. Louis Post-Dispatch, Melanie refers to The Voice as a good learning experience that brought tons of exposure.
Te downside?
“It’s so hard for artists to show they’re an artist after a show like that. I couldn’t play shows without people saying to play ‘Toxic,’” she said, referring to her blind audition song on the show.
“No. I want to play what I played in my parents’ bathroom in Long Island, not an old-ass Britney cover. Now I can do what I want.”
Lots of people are now turning out to watch Melanie sing what she wants. She has 19 spring tour dates in the U.S. and Canada listed on her Facebook page. All but four are sold out. Those sold-out shows includes stops in Philly and D.C.
Then she’s off to Europe where her show in London sold out so quickly, she just announced on Facebook that she’s adding a second date.
And that’s nothing to cry about.
