Idols on the Music Chart, Phillip Phillips

Phillip Phillips goes platinum with ‘Home’

American Idol announced Wednesday that Season 11 winner Phillip Phillips’ “Home” has gone platinum, meaning it has sold 1 million downloads.

Pretty heady stuff considering “Home” burst onto Billboard’s Hot 100 after the Idol finale, but then quickly disappeared.

Of course, it was NBC’s use of the song as a theme for the USA women’s gymnastics team during the Olympics that sparked the surge in sales.

Last week, it soared from number 47 to number one on Billboard’s digital download chart and from number 84 to number nine on the Hot 100.

This week, it holds its number nine spot on the Hot 100, but drops to number two on the digital chart.

I still find all this incredibly ironic. NBC is home of “The Voice,” a chief rival of Idol. The show has yet to score a major hit with any of the artists it has featured.

Yet NBC inadvertently turned the first single from the most recent Idol winner into a mega-hit.

Last night, days after the Olympic gymnastics competition ended, the song was still number three on iTunes’ singles chart.

The only songs ahead of it: The brand new single from Taylor Swift (little surprise there) and Flo Rida’s “Whistle.”

And the song shows no signs of going away.

In fact, it’s now featured in the trailer for the upcoming movie “Trouble with the Curve,” which hits theaters Sept. 21 and stars Clint Eastwood, Justin Timberlake and Amy Adams.

Congrats to Phillip and Idol.

The show has served up lots of turkeys in terms of coronation songs in recent years. (Everyone remember “No Boundaries” from Season 8.)

Clearly “Home” isn’t one of them.

The Season 11 Idols, by the way, will bring their summer tour to Philly on Tuesday. For ticket information, go here.

If you haven’t seen it, here’s the trailer for “Trouble with the Curve.”
