Episode seven of “Platinum Hit” was the show’s best yet, even if the results were more than a bit disappointing.
This was the Johnny and Nick show, as in computer programmer Johnny Marnell and supreme egotist Nick Nittoli.
Oh, the other cast members — Sonyae Elise and Brian Judah; Jes Hudak and Scotty Granger — were around. But once names were drawn from a hat and Johnny and Nick wound up on the same team, the drama was focused squarely on them.
Why?
Well, Johnny was convinced Nick was going to try to foist some “power pop anthem garbage” on his winning hook as they tried to turn it into a winning song suitable for the likes of Gavin DeGraw.
Nick, frustrated because his ideas were being shot down, finally walked out of the writing session, convinced Johnny was trying to get him booted from the competition by “throwing the song” so they’d finish last.
Among their many classic exchanges: Nick telling Johnny his song was “horrible” because he didn’t have anyone to “carry” him this episode. Followed by Johnny asking Nick if he was a “delusional moron.” Answer: Yes.
In the end, Johnny wound up writing nearly all of a song called “Old Day Sunrise,” which was indeed proclaimed the episode’s worst.
That meant one of them would go home, taking the fall for a song that one judge labeled “a lyrical cesspool.”
And, since Johnny wrote most of the song, I suppose the judges figured he had to take the fall.
So “Platinum Hit” lost one of its most talented songwriters.
And Nick, who hasn’t contributed to a winning song since the second week of the competition, survived to offend for another week.
Hey, I guess the show needs its main villain.
Take heart, Johnny. At least you were sent packing with compliments from the judges on your talent.
Nick, meanwhile, is putting together a video resume of the likes that you have to wonder if anyone in the music industry will ever want to work alongside him.
Looking for the positive in episode number seven?
The winning song, “Stranger to Love,” was written by Sonyae and Brian and was good enough to pitch to Beyonce, according to one judge.
With Sonyae’s knack for lyrics and Brian’s knack for melody, they made a formidable duo. Don’t look now, but I think that’s the fourth straight week Brian has contributed to the winning song.
Scotty and Jes wrote a song called “Love You Down” for the likes of Justin Bieber. The judges weren’t as impressed with it.
But, then again, it was a song written for the likes of Justin Bieber. I mean, how good could it possibly be when that’s the goal?
Editor’s Note: Platinum Hit returns Friday at 8 p.m. on Bravo. For those counting, in seven weeks, Scotty and Brian have each contributed to four winning songs, Sonyae to three and Jes and Nick to two apiece.
