Two singers will be cut as The Voice cuts down to a Top 10.
For a look at my song by song grades from last night, head here. For a look at how the singers are doing on iTunes, head here.
Here’s how I suspect it will all play out.
No reason to worry: Adam Levine handed Matt McAndrew a great song choice; Matt turned it into the performance of the night. Craig Wayne Boyd went balladeer and proved his versatility. Damien Lawson continued to sound fabulous.
Shouldn’t have to worry: Does anyone think Luke Wade deserves to go home because of that lyric flub? Especially considering how great he sounded after recovering? Anita Antoinette’s song choice was a bit predictable, but her fans will rally behind that performance. York’s DaNica Shirey took a risk with her song choice, and made it work.
Special treatment: Four singers needed coaches’ saves to advance to the Top 12. Three — Sugar Joans, Ryan Sill and Jessie Pitts — were forced to sing in the first three slots Monday night, a major disadvantage in a two-hour show. The fourth saved singer, Chris Jamison, got to sing next to last. What’s that about? Special treatment because he’s a “cute guy” in Adam’s words? It smacked of something American Idol would do. It might be one reason Chris’ performance was one of my least favorites.
Fans will rescue them: I wasn’t especially enamored with the vocals from John Taylor Williams or Reagan James last night. I suspect both have a large enough fan base to survive. In terms of song choices, Reagan was handed the night’s biggest turkey. Wow, I would have preferred if Blake made her sing a country song.
In jeopardy: Ryan Sill and Jessie Pitts, who were saved last week, didn’t get preferential treatment this week. Jessie, with that wonderfully unique voice of hers, continues to surprise me with her iTunes results. Still, I wouldn’t be surprised to see both these singers standing with the bottom three tonight.
Gone: Sugar Joans was forced to sing first. Her single from last night is the only one that hadn’t cracked the iTunes Top 200 by 8 a.m. this morning. And if she winds up needing an instant save, she’s toast. Her fan base is in California, where fans would have to tweet to save her hours before the show is aired. Which is just one reason The Voice should ditch that instant save.

One of these days somebody is going to device a way to truly find “the voice” instead of it ultimately becoming a popularity contest! By this years coached own admissions almost every time she sings DaNica Shirey IS THE VOICE!!!!
