Predictions for Top 5 results night on The Voice

The Top 5 learn their fate tonight on The Voice.

Three advance; two go home.

Well, not so fast.

There is that little matter of the wild card spot in the finals. And you would think whoever doesn’t advance from the Top 5 would have the best chance of mustering enough support to advance in that fashion.

But before we get to the wild card round (just a reminder, I’ll be live blogging and providing song by song grades), here are my predictions on how things will go down with the results from last night.

No need to worry: If Matt McAndrew doesn’t breeze into next week’s finals, there’s a major problem in Voice land. Not only were both his songs sitting in the Top 15 on iTunes this morning, two of his previous songs from the show (“The Blower’s Daughter” and “Take Me to Church”) were in the Top 60. “Make It Rain” was last night’s best performance.

Shouldn’t have to worry: There were some great song choices last night, none better than the decision to have Craig Wayne Boyd deliver an emotional version of “The Old Rugged Cross.” The song struck a major chord with viewers (#2 on iTunes) and should have sealed a spot in next week’s finale for Craig Wayne.

Yet more special treatment. UGH!!! Now, hold it. In the four weeks since the live playoffs, Chris Jamison has gotten the pimp spot twice and gotten to sing next to last once. In addition to that, he was the last singer to perform for the instant save last week. Wow, The Voice isn’t even trying to disguise the favoritism it’s showing Chris. The good news: He delivered a very fine performance of “When I Was Your Man” to close Monday’s show, right after two other members of the Top 5 faltered a bit. So I can’t argue too much if he makes the finals.

Wrong time for an off night: Taylor John Williams has been a bit inconsistent on The Voice Season 7. Unfortunately, Monday was not his best night. Not by a long shot. He gets — and deserves — high praise for his artistry and the way he reworks popular songs. “Royals” worked splendidly last week. “Blank Space” simply did not work. On any level.

Hope for the wild card: Out of the 10 songs performed last night, Damien has landed as eighth best and worst on iTunes. He simply doesn’t have the same impact when he goes upbeat, like he did last night with “I Don’t Want to Wait” on his second performance. Well, his fans are likely to have to wait until the wild card results are in to find out Damien’s fate on the show. If voting is following the iTunes download trend, Damien has very little chance of being voted into the finals.

So the three who should be voted into the finals based on last night’s performances are Matt McAndrew, Craig Wayne Boyd and Chris Jamison.

If we’re basing the Top 3 selection on what’s happened over the course of Season 7, I’d replace Chris with Taylor John Williams.

I agree with you regarding with Chris ever since Adam choose to save him over the other two in the Live Playoffs. It’s pretty obvious that he’s receiving special treatment and I’m wary of him to this day because of it.

Chris is current, talented and fresh. So sick of same ole, same ole. I’m tired of these middle aged country dudes who sing Christian songs to pander to their base and exploit religious beliefs. Matt, Chris are young and fresh and have actual careers ahead of them. Even Taylor. Let’s vote someone based on talent, not which religious service they attend or which southern state they reside in. they should have a separate singing show for these types of contestants only.

If that’s the case, then the blind audition should not be part of the process. Whether we like or not there are other contestants who have these backgrounds have enter the competition. There some of my favorite artists in past seasons did not make it through but not all of the time.

I’m so tired of the coaches claiming this is the ‘best season ever’ or ‘best collection of talent ever’ on the show. Ugh. Season 7 is kinda average, at best. Of course, there’s no breakout star. And, there really isn’t anybody who doesn’t sound like somebody else who’s already out there. I don’t have any favorites. Craig may be the less same as the others, so that’s a bonus — but that’s all. Matt will probably win, and be joined by CWB and Chris in the final 3. The add-on Wild Card won’t matter at all. It’s a simply a new gimmick to bring fake drama to the show. Ho hum.
