The American Idol finals start Tuesday night at 8 p.m., so it’s time to refresh fans with quick facts about the 12 singers still in the running.
Just for good measure, I’ve included links to stories from their hometown newspapers and to their non-Idol music in cases where it’s still available.
Aaron Kelly
* He’s 16 from Sonestown, Pa. (think Sullivan County, west of Scranton, east of Williamsport)
* He earned a chance to audition this year by winning at the new American Idol Experience attraction at Disney World.
* He attended Idol Camp in 2007.
* During the Road to Hollywood episode, he explained that he was raised by his aunt and uncle after social services intervened and nearly took him from his birth parents.
* He attends a cyber school and has been working ahead so he says he isn’t missing a lot in terms of school life because of Idol.
* Primarily a country singer, he’s been performing the fair circuit in Pennsylvania for years; you’ll find photos of him performing at the Clinton County Fair, the Jamestown Fair, the Bloomsburg Fair and Sonestown’s own Heritage Days on his MySpace.

Music: “Broken Road;” “Cry Like Memphis”
Andrew Garcia
* He’s 24 from Moreno Valley, Calif.
* Prior to Idol, he performed with a progressive rock band called Ovid. Search for Ovid on YouTube and you can find several videos of him singing with the group.
* Says his motivation for auditioning for Idol was providing a better life for his son, who is about 2 years old.
* Credits his father, also a musician, for giving him his musical talent.
* Became an early frontrunner with a widely praised acoustic rendition of Paula Abdul’s “Straight Up” on the first day of Hollywood Week.
* Told Idol: “I change up songs. That’s what I do. I love doing it. I choose songs you wouldn’t expect me to choose.”
* In the semifinals, those unusual choices included Christina Aguilera’s “Genie in a Bottle,” which wasn’t nearly as well received as “Straight Up.”
Hometown story: The Press-Enterprise of Riverside, Calif.
Music: Michael Jackson tribute; “Dancing in the Dark” (with Ovid)
Casey James

* He might never live down peeling off his shirt at Kara DioGuardi’s request during his audition or being labeled “ear candy as well as eye candy” by her in the first round of the semifinals.
* Was in a serious motorcycle crash at age 21 and, at one point, didn’t think he’d be able to play the guitar again.
* According to the Fort Worth Star-Telegram, he hails from the Parker County town of Cool and once spent 3 months in jail for DWI.
* Neverthless, tells Idol he’s a big Star Wars fan. “I’m kind of a nerd. That’s my big secret.”
* Has been playing in bands in the Fort Worth area for about 10 years.
* Credits his mom with convincing him to audition. “She kind of pointed out the fact that it’s a freebie chance. Kind of like playing the lottery, but without even having to pay.”

* Her grandmother taught her how to speak Portuguese, and Katie told Idol she can say “kiss me” in six languages, but quickly added that she doesn’t go around asking for kisses.
* In January 2009, she won Miss Westbury’s Outstanding Teen Pageant. Later that year, she was first runner-up in the Miss Connecticut Outstanding Teen competition. Her talent was singing; she performed a Whitney Houston song.

* She made it to the judges’ mansion episode in season eight of Idol before being cut in favor of eventual finalist Megan Joy.
* She told Amarillo.com that she was painfully shy as a child. But she sang with her sisters at her parents’ anniversary when she was 14, and that helped her come out of her shell.
* In her season eight Idol video, she described her favorite music as blues, indie, “anything that has a unique sound and is pretty catchy.”
