So, are you suffering from singing show withdrawal with American Idol and The Voice off the air?
If so, FOX thinks it has the answer. The Four — complete with all those chants of “eat, eat, eat” — returns for a second season Thursday night at 8 p.m.
If you missed Season 1, here’s the format. Four singers occupy seats on the four. Challengers show up each week to try to take one of those seats away.
Those challengers sing once for the judges — Sean “Diddy” Combs, Meghan Trainor and DJ Khaled — to convince them they’re worthy of challenging one of “The Four.” The challenge commences; the audience votes on who wins.
If you missed Season 1, here’s what you missed.
The show launched a social media superstar in 17-year-old Zhavia Ward, who has since signed with Columbia Records and is featured on the track “Welcome to the Party” from “Deadpool 2.” The music video for the song has racked up 27 million views in two weeks. The did not win The Four, however.
The winner was Evvie McKinney, who didn’t even show up until Week 5 of The Four’s six-week inaugural season. Yep, that’s the way this convoluted format works. She’s supposedly in the studio recording a debut single. Time will tell if we ever hear from her again.
Jason Warrior, a former Voice contestant, showed up, did fairly well, but wound up being labeled “rude” and “disrespectful” for the very type of over-the-top antics this show embraces. The should have been fair warning to serious singers out there — DO NOT audition “The Four.”
Oh, and The Four’s fourth judge, Charlie Walk, former president of Republic Records, left the show mid-season after allegations of sexual misconduct arose. His judge’s chair simply disappeared, without explanation.
So here comes Season 2. With an original four of hip-hop artist Saraya J., imported pop singer Stephanie Zelaya, imported pop singer James Graham and the soulful one, Carvena Jones.
More on them later. Meanwhile, here are a couple of videos to get you in the mood for Season 2.
