Ryleigh Modig was the recipient of a rare triple steal and Andrew Marshal was stolen for a second time on The Voice Monday night.
Ryleigh landed on Team Legend after losing a Team Kelly battle round match but had John, Blake and Nick all press their steal buttons for her.
Andrew, meanwhile, was stolen back from Team Blake by his original coach, Nick Jonas.
He’s the only stolen singer to survive Monday night. Gene Garcia and Keegan Ferrell, recipients of battle round steals, were both eliminated.
Also advancing from Monday’s knockout round matches were Corey Ward, Jordan Matthew Young, Pete Mroz, Dana Monique, Victor Solomon and Pia Renee.
BEST OF THE NIGHT
TEAM KELLY
The match: Corey Ward vs. Ryleigh Modig
The songs: For Corey, Kelly Clarkson’s “Already Gone”; for Ryleigh, Kings of Leon’s “Use Somebody”
The feedback: Blake and John each gave the edge to Corey. Kelly complimented Ryleigh’s special vibe. Kelly loved Corey’s version of her own song.
The outcome: Kelly named Corey the winner. John, Nick and Blake all tried to steal Ryleigh. She opted to join Team Legend.
My take: Corey took a Kelly song, made it his own and delivered a heart-wrenching vocal. That was easily his best performance on the show. Ryleigh also did a great job of making a song we all know her own. And showed off a really pretty singing tone doing it. But Kelly still made the right choice.
GOOD THING THERE WAS A STEAL
TEAM BLAKE
The match: Pete Mroz vs. Andrew Marshall
The songs: For Andrew, “I Won’t Give Up” by Jason Mraz. For Pete, “Before You Go” by Louis Capaldi.
The feedback: John thought that knockout was even. Nick gave the edge to Andrew. Kelly thought Pete took the match. Blake also said it was very near even.
The outcome: Blake named Pete the winner, saying he was sure he’d deliver in the live shows. Andrew was then stolen back by Nick, his original coach.
My take: Andrew delivered an intense, emotional performance with a nice dramatic build. Then Pete counter-punched by doing the same darn thing. I would have given a slight edge to Andrew because I preferred his vocal a bit better.
THE COACH GOT IT WRONG
TEAM LEGEND
The match: Victor Solomon vs. Gene Garcia
The songs: For Gene, “Afterglow” by Ed Sheeran; For Victor, “My Girl” by The Temptations
The feedback: Kelly gave the edge to Gene. Blake and Nick preferred Victor. John loved the way Victor made a classic cover his own, but complimented Gene as well.
The outcome: John named Victor the winner; Gene was eliminated.
My take: Victor turned in a smooth and stylish performance of a classic, slipping in a couple of high notes to remind us of his range. Gene countered with a singer-songwriter approach, delivered a fine vocal and came off as more authentic.
SHAME THERE WASN’T A STEAL
TEAM LEGEND
The match: Ciana Pelekai vs. Pia Renee
The songs: For Ciana, “Cuz I Love You” by Lizzo. For Pia, “What the World Needs Now Is Love.”
The feedback: Kelly, Blake and Nick all seemed to prefer Pia. John said Ciana delivered her “A” game. He called Pia’s performance “remarkable.”
The outcome: John named Pia the winner; Ciana was eliminated.
My take: Since the show is called The Voice, I supposed John got it right. Pia certainly delivered a great ending. But I was also really impressed with Ciana. I don’t remember her showing off such a big voice in the blinds. And what stage presence.
THE COACH GOT IT RIGHT
TEAM NICK:
The match: Dana Monique vs. Keegan Ferrell
The songs: For Dana, “Nutbush City Limits.” For Keegan, “Just My Imagination” by The Temptations.
The feedback: Kelly gave the edge to Dana. John and Blake really didn’t commit. Nick complimented both singers.
The outcome: Nick named Dana the winner. Keegan was eliminated.
My take: But, oh, my, can Dana sing. And command a stage. Voice viewers have a history of short-changing big-voiced female R&B singers. But that was perhaps the best performance we’ve seen on The Voice this season.
The truth: No steals remained when this match was taped.
TEAM BLAKE
The match: Ethan Lively vs. Jordan Matthew Young
The songs: For Jordan, “She Talks to Angels” by The Black Crowes, For Ethan, “Help Me Hold On” by Travis Tritt
The feedback: Kelly and John each gave the edge to Jordan. Blake complimented them both.
The outcome: Blake named Jordan the winner, saying he thinks he’s more prepared for the lives. Ethan was eliminated.
My take: Jordan’s rasp was the perfect match for this song. With Voice fans love for country rockers, he could do very well on the show. By comparison, Ethan’s performance seemed a little sleepy, though there’s nothing sleepy about that deep voice of his.
