But John Legend liked the edge she brought to her performance of “Garota De Ipanema” by Antônio Carlos Jobim.
And his chair turn was enough to earn the 26-year-old from East Orange, N.J., a spot on the show.
Here’s what Sabrina told Voice Views about her blind audition experience.
Voice Views: How did you wind up auditioning for The Voice?
Sabrina: I received an email about auditions and saw that it was virtual this year. I decided to give it a shot just for fun and got a callback! I was so thrilled!
Voice Views: Why did you perform “Garota de Ipanema” for your audition song?
Sabrina: I performed “Garota de Ipanema” for my audition song because it was unique. No one ever sang in Portuguese on The Voice and I thought it would be amazing to be the first person to sing such a classic and represent my culture on the show.

Voice Views: How would you describe that blind audition experience? And can you tell us a bit more about how it went since we saw only a small snippet? For instance, at what point did John turn? What’s some of the more memorable feedback you got?
Sabrina: The blind audition was a mix of emotions. I was extremely nervous and even shaking when I started singing. I was extra nervous because I was taking a risk by singing in Portuguese.
Everything was such a blur because of all the nerves but the performance was amazing and the crowd was hyped! The more I sang, the more comfortable I felt on that stage. I wish everyone could see the full performance because it was truly amazing.
John Legend turned soon after I started singing. I loved all of the feedback I got from the coaches. Kelly Clarkson said she was waiting to hear more range but knowing this song, she respected that I stayed true to it and understood why I didn’t add more range.
Blake Shelton said that as soon as he heard me he looked at John and said “That’s your girl” and that was the reason he didn’t turn. Ariana Grande said she loves the song I sang and was literally about to click her button! John loved every moment and said he was in a good mood as soon as the music started. He loved that I added my own twist and made it my own!”
