Are you wondering what Sam Woolf thought of the American Idol twist that resulted in his elimination?

During a Friday afternoon conference call with the media, the 18-year-old from Bradenton, Fla., labeled it as “too much drama.”

“That twist,” he said, “I really didn’t think it should have happened.”

With just a few minutes left in Thursday’s broadcast, Ryan Seacrest gave the five remaining contestants an option.

They could proceed with a normal elimination. Or they could opt to stay together for another week and send two singers home next Thursday.

But if they chose to buck the norm, the vote would have to be unanimous.

Sam says they huddled up as a group. Initially, the thought was that they would vote to keep all five contestants safe for another week.

But Sam said it soon became clear not everyone was in favor of facing a double elimination next Thursday.

Sam says he voted to keep everyone safe, but did so before he realized the vote wouldn’t be unanimous and indicated he might have changed his vote if it hadn’t been too late.

“Stop hating on Alex and Jena,” it read. “No one knew what the results were before the decisions were made. Anybody could of went home.”

The “twist” wasn’t exactly a hit with the Idols that survived, either.

Tweeted Jess Meuse: “So was that twist reminiscent of the @TheHungerGames or what? #ew #hateit #mean”

And Alex: “That twist was not cool. Didn’t make sense at all. Should have just kept it the same. Whatever. Sam HAS a career, he’s about to explode. Everyone voted tonight, knowing that they themselves could go home. No one knew. It is Americas vote, has been for 13 years.”

During the conference call, Sam also said he didn’t exactly embrace the teen-heartthrob label Idol seemed hellbent on giving him. Twice, the show had him performing while surrounded by adoring young girls.

“I wouldn’t really place myself in that category if I had the choice,” he said. “It’s not really who I am. I don’t think I’m a heartthrob.”

Among the other topics Sam touched on:

* He’s hoping to release a first album that’s “organic and maybe John Mayer-y acoustic rock.”

* He’s been accepted into the Berklee College of Music and will began taking classes there next fall unless his plans change between now and then.

* He said all three judges were very complimentary after Thursday’s show and said “I have a good career ahead of me.”

* He admitted that getting comfortable performing live on stage was his biggest challenge, but thinks he improved at it over the course of the show.

* He said his favorite performances were his covers of David Gray’s “Sail Away” and Imagine Dragons’ “It’s Time.”

* And those who think Sam is a heartthrob might want to know this: He looks for a sense of humor in a woman.
