John Legend picked up a third four-chair-turn artist in Shawn Sounds.
No other coach on The Voice has more than one.
Kelly Clarkson swiped another country singer from country king Blake Shelton when she landed Abby Kasch.
And Denton Arnell landed a spot on Season 16 and a fiance all in one blind audition.
Though that unplanned head butt between Denton and girlfriend Tiffany wound up being one of the most memorable moments on a whirlwind night of The Voice.
When the dust settled, 11 more singers had earned spots on the show. Here’s the recap.
BEST OF THE NIGHT
Shawn Sounds, 33, Houston, Texas
The song: “All My Life” by K-C & Jo Jo
The audition: Shawn showed off a strong versatile voice and prompted a rash of chair turns by Adam Levine, John Legend and Blake Shelton midway through the song. He went on to show great range and a really nice run at the end prompted a turn from Kelly Clarkson as well, giving Shawn a four-chair turn. John praised Shawn for a beautiful tone and one of the best song-ending runs he’s heard. “It’s like you did the triple-axle in figure skating and nailed it,” John said.
The outcome: Shawn chose Team John.
RUNNER-UP
Ciera Dumas, 21, Kernersville, N.C.
The song: “Tell Me You Love Me” by Demi Lovato
The audition: A very strong opening prompted quick chair turns from John Legend and Adam Levine. John loved the power and emotion in her voice. Adam called her “spectacular” and praised the power in her voice. John loved the rasp when Ciera started to belt.
The outcome: Ciera decided to join Team Adam Levine.
ALSO MADE SEASON 16
Beth Griffith Manley, 46
The song: “Until You Come Back to Me” by Aretha Franklin
The audition: Midway through her audition, she prompted chair turns from John Legend and Kelly Clarkson. Kelly complimented her effortless performance and the fact that she nailed an Aretha Franklin song.
The outcome: Noting the similarity of the rasp in their voices, Beth picked Team Kelly.
Selkii, 31, Durban, South Africa
The song: “I Try” by Macy Gray
The audition: Adam Levine was impressed from the first note and turned soon after the audition began. It took a while, but Selkii’s powerful vocal eventually coaxed a chair turn from Blake Shelton as well. Though she didn’t turn, Kelly says Selkii’s singing style will make her unique on the show. Blake calls her a complete package.
The outcome: Selkii joined Team Blake.
Abby Kasch, 20, Palios Park, Ill.
The song: “Here for the Party” by Gretchen Wilson
The audition: Abby showed wonderful energy from the first note of the song. And when chairs are slow to turn, she seems to find another gear on stage. This young lady has a powerful voice. Then Blake Shelton and Kelly Clarkson turn in rapid succession. Blake said he turned around out of passion, excitement and desperation to have Abby on his team. Kelly said she had to turn because she loved the performance.
The outcome: Abby decided to join Team Kelly. Chalk up a second country singer for Team ClaRKson.
Mikaela Astel, 14, Queens, N.Y’
The song: “Electric Love” by BØRNS
The audition: Mikaela immediately shows off a unique singing voice. And Kelly turns immediate. This young lady has an interesting lilt in her voice. She also enticed a chair turn from John Legend. Kelly complimented her on a tone that can’t be taught — one that’s beautiful and angelic. Kelly also reminded her of her success with young singers. John says she sounds like someone who would stand out from the crowd.
The outcome: Mikaela joined Team Kelly.
Denton Arnell, 31, Chicago, Ill.
The song: “Hold On, We’re Going Home” by Drake
The audition: Denton’s upbeat performance earned a quick chair turn from John Legend. Denton also delivered an impressive ending, but couldn’t get another chair to turn. John loved the excitement Denton put into the performance and complimented him on a wonderful tone.
The outcome: As a result, Denton automatically became a member of Team John. And after landing a spot on the show, Denton called out his girlfriend Tiffany and proposed to her. She said yes, in spite of the accidental head butt. Watch it all play out below.
Andrew Sevener, 22, Alvarado, Texas
The song: “Honky Tonk Woman”
The audition: Andrew tears into the song with a vengeance. But it’s a brief — and impressive — guitar solo that seemed to prompt Blake Shelton to turn his chair. In spite of a high-energy performance, Blake wound up being the only coach to turn. Blake said Andrew “knocked it out of the park.”
The outcome: Andrew automatically joined Team Blake.
Mari, 20, Claremont, Fla.
The song: “Boo’d Up” by Ella Mai
The audition: Mari’s unique sound prompted quick chair turns from Adam Levine, John Legend and Kelly Clarkson. Mari also delivered some very nice runs near the end of the performance. Kelly Clarkson said she sounded “so cool.” John said she came off as very confident. Oh, he also noted he did a duet with Ella Mai on her new album. Adam complimented the fact that she’s so unique and on her great tone.
The outcome: Mari opted to joined Team Adam Levine.
Anthony Ortiz, 20, Tampa, Fla.
The song: “What Makes You Beautiful” by One Direction
The audition: We saw only a tiny snippet of Anthony’s audition, but Adam said he likes his potential.
The outcome: Adam was the only coach to turn, so Anthony automatically became Team Adam.
Oliv Blu, 20, Flossmoor, Ill.
“On & On” by Erykah Badu
The audition: We only saw a snippet, but Oliv looked very confident on stage. John Legend turned, complimenting Oliv on having her own style and flipping the song in cool ways.
The outcome: Since John was the only coach to turn, Oliv automatically became Team Legend.
NO CHAIR TURNS
Jae Jin, 33, Baltimore
The song: “Hallelujah I Just Love Her So” by Ray Charles.
The audition: Jae hit one heck of a glory note at the end of the performance, but no one turned. Adam thought the song choice was a bit too laid-back. John said he wanted more grit in the performance.
The outcome: Jae didn’t make the show and wasn’t selected for the Comeback Stage.
Crystal Rose, 26, Kansas City, Miss.
The song: “Wicked Game”
The audition: She put her own spin on the classic hit, but couldn’t get a chair to turn. Shame, I thought she had a very unique tone. And give her credit for not doing a straight-up cover. Blake encouraged her to use this audition as fuel for a future return to The Voice.
The outcome: She won’t have to wait long for a second chance. She’s selected for the Comeback Stage.
Kayla Seeber, 18, Poplar Grove, Ill
The song: “Baby One More Time” by Britney Spears
The audition: Kayla put a unique spin on the Britney hit, but in this case I’m not sure it’s working really well. It’s a playful song, and Kayla sounds more angry that flirty. No one turned. Kelly said she loved Kayla’s take on the song.
The outcome: That said, Kayla is bound for the Comeback Stage.
