But there’s this bit of good news: Owen plans to release new music as soon as possible.
The D.C. native and New York resident says he was working on a new EP before The Voice came along.
Now that it’s over — barring a possible return in the season finale — he plans to complete that project.
“I have the songs and I have people lined up to record with. I’m going to jump into the studio as soon as I get back,” Owen said during a Wednesday conference call with the media.
The singer-songwriter released an impressive album called “Twelve Stories” in 2014. He said fans can expect a more focused followup.
“‘Twelve Stories’ — I’m really, really proud of it and I’m very proud of every song on there,” he said. “But it’s definitely a little all over the place.
“There’s almost like a country song on there, then a rock song. There are a few songs on there that I think really are the foundation and direction that I want to go in.”
He pointed to “Amsterdam,” “Hometown Headstone” and “I Wish I Knew Better” as examples. You can check out two of those below.
“They’re all kind of lyric-driven, folk-rock, a kind of Paul Simon inspired thing. I think that’s where I really feel comfortable. And I don’t hear too much like that right now.”
Owen was 26 when he auditioned for The Voice with “Don’t Think Twice, It’s All Right” by Bob Dylan. He was one of just five singers from Season 10 to entice all four coaches to turn around for his blind audition.
Given his ranking on iTunes following Monday’s show, he says he wasn’t shocked to find himself in the bottom two for a second straight week.
Last week, he earned fans’ instant save. This week, that save went to Daniel Passino, who sang “Jealous” for his save-me song. Owen opted for “Burning House” and stumbled with the lyrics at one point.
But it’s a song fans just might hear him perform again if they attend an Owen Danoff show in the future. Yep, he’s also already looking into booking post-Voice shows.
“I think that’s a song that transcends genre,” he said of the country cross-over hit by Cam. “I think it’s beautifully written and the guitar part for it is amazing. I think I’m actually going to be covering that at some shows going forward because I think it’s a gorgeous piece of music.”
His biggest takeaway from The Voice in terms of advice?
It’s a message he heard from coach Adam Levine and from guest advisers Tori Kelly and Miley Cyrus.
“They were really, really pushing me to be comfortable in myself as an artist and not feel like I need to change the way that I sound or the way I am to connect with people. I think that’s the most encouraging. That’s really the biggest thing I want to take with me moving forward.”
Fans can continue to follow Owen through his website and on Facebook. On Twitter, he’s simply @owendanoff.
