Toneisha Harris turned four chairs during the blind auditions on The Voice Season 18.
Fans witnessed her enjoy success on the show a second time Monday night when she prevailed in a battle round match over Jacob Daniel Murphy.
The two Team Blake artists delivered a fun performance of Lizzo’s “Good as Hell.”
But it was Toneisha whom Blake decided to advance to the knockout round. During the battle round feedback, John Legend praised Toneisha, saying she demonstrated “finale quality” vocals.
Here’s what Toneisha, 44, of Roswell, Ga., told Voice Views about her battle round experience.
Voice Views: What do you think was the key to your success in the battle round?
Toneisha: I believe my success with the battle came from simply giving it my all, making the song my own, all while still having fun with the performance!
Voice Views: How did the song choice work for you? Did it pose any special challenges?
Toneisha: I had never performed this song before the Battle and it was a challenge as much of the verses were originally done in rap — which is not something I’ve done. We were both tasked with being creative with the song while keeping the integrity of the original song. I loved that it pushed my boundaries and showed versatility!
Voice Views: Did you have much experience singing duets or performing with others prior to the battle round? And, if so, do you think that worked to your advantage in preparing for the battle and how so?
Toneisha: Growing up singing with my family definitely prepared me for the battle. Because of that experience, I was comfortable with finding harmonies while sharing a moment, and space, with another great singer!
Voice Views: Anything else you’d like to add about the battle round experience?
Toneisha: This definitely did not feel like a battle, it felt like a duet performance with a friend and that made this moment one that I won’t soon forget!
Voice Views: And, obviously, you can’t talk about song choice, but is there a side of your artistry you haven’t gotten to display yet that you hope to in coming rounds?
Toneisha: I’m looking forward to showing a softer side as I continue to grow and tell a story each time I am able to grace the stage. I believe I’m still discovering more about my voice during this process and I’m excited that we get to experience this growth together!!
