Mike Jerel is one of the talented artists advancing to the knockouts on The Voice.

Mike was declared winner of a battle round match with Zach Day on the first night of The Voice battles. They performed “Adorn” by Miguel.

Mike previously turned four chairs in the blind auditions. He did that with a performance of “It’s a Man’s, Man’s, Man’s World.”

Here’s what Mike, 31, of Ashburn, Ga., told Voice Views about his battle round experience.

Voice Views: What do you think was the key to your success in the battle round?

Mike: I believe that going and working on the key concepts that John wanted me to work on, led me to success on my battle round.

Voice Views: How did the song choice work for you? Did it pose any special challenges?

Mike: I typically wouldn’t sing “Adorn” in any of my sets. So it was definitely challenging to make that song unique. It was even more interesting singing the song as a duet.

Voice Views: Did you have much experience singing duets or performing with others prior to the battle round? And, if so, do you think that worked to your advantage in preparing for the battle and how so?

Mike: I have had some experience singing duets. I definitely believe those experiences helped in this round.

Voice Views: And, obviously, you can’t talk about song choice, but is there a side of your artistry you haven’t gotten to display yet that you hope to in coming rounds?

Mike: There is a side of my artistry that I am still waiting to show. Moving forward, I would love to tap into even more layers of my artistry.
