Glance at the Apple Music charts today and you’ll see an impressive sight.
Chayce Beckham is at number one on the overall chart with his original song, “23.”
Season 19 Voice finalist Ian Flanigan is at number 4 with “Grow Up,” which features a vocal assist from Blake Shelton.
And over on the country chart, Chayce and Ian were sitting at number one and number two as of noon.
Katy Perry noted on Sunday’s episode of American Idol that Chayce was doing well on the charts. At the time, “23” was sitting at number one on the country chart and number four on Apple Music’s overall singles chart.
By Monday, after Chayce performed a snippet of “23” on the show, the song jumped to number one on the Apple Music Top 200 songs. It’s been there ever since.
Of course, singing show contestants have done well on the charts before. At one point, Voice contestants dominated the Top 10 after every performance show.
But that was back when downloads and streams counted as votes. Back when fans had an extra incentive to stream and download those songs multiple times.
There are no votes attached to Chayce’s chart performance. And don’t forget, he wrote “23.” It’s not a song that was handed to him by American Idol.
As for Ian, he performed “Grow Up” on Monday’s performance episode of The Voice. When Monday’s show started, the song was no where to be found on the Top 200. It was sitting at number 137 on the country singles chart.
One performance on The Voice later, and Ian has a chart hit on his hands.
“This is a dream!” he wrote on Twitter.
This is also why I’ve long argued that all guest performance spots on The Voice should go to past contestants. That way, millions of people can hear the great new music they’re releasing.
The Voice might be catching on.
Tonight, Season 17 champ Jake Hoot will perform “I Would Have Loved You,” a song released earlier this year. It’s a duet with Kelly Clarkson.
So about that catching on … well, I’m not getting too excited yet. The Voice might only be catching on if a coach sings on the song.
But, hey, at least it’s a step in the right direction. And kudos to Kelly and Blake for supporting their former contestants.
