Vyann of American Idol Season 24
Idol returned to ABC on Monday, Jan. 26 with the judging trio of Luke Bryan, Carrie Underwood and Lionel Richie. Audition episodes will continue to air on Mondays through most of February.
Here’s more about Vyann:
* She’s Vyann Eteme, from Baltimore and a graduate of Yale University with a double major in music and public health.
* She has three singles out — covers of “Black is Beautiful” and Marvin Gaye’s “What’s Going On” and an original called “The Farewell Song.”
* Vyann released “The Farewell Song” in November. She recorded the song when she was a college freshman “after is sat in the vault what is my mind for like eight years.” Check out a version of the song below.
* On social media, Vyann says that in spite of its title the song “represents a beginning. Ironically, it is a song about saying goodbye -— an ending. But to me the piece represents birth; birth of a new era, the beginning of my career as an artist, a singer songwriter, a creative. This song is beautiful to me. I think it will creep up on you, as it did to a 12 year old me, with gentleness and remembrance.”
* On her website, Vyann says she studied classical piano for 13 years and is described as a self-trained jazz vocalist and composer “devoted to creating music that speaks to her life and honors traditions of the Black diaspora.”
* She says her influences include Erykah Badu, Roberta Flack, Alicia Keys, H.E.R, John Legend, Adele and Lauryn Hill.
* She already has more then 12,000 followers and 135,000 likes on her TikTok. And nearly 100,000 streams on a brilliant vocal in which she turns a Chopin étude into a jazz standard.
* Vyann announced her audition in late November. And apparently her sister submitted the audition tape without Vyann’s knowledge.
* Oh, and Vyann will be pursuing her master’s degree in public health in her hometown, at Johns Hopkins University.
