When I saw a notice on MySpace that there would be big news in the world of David Archuleta last week, I assumed it was the announcement that he’d be performing at this weekend’s July 4 celebration in Washington, D.C.

He is, of course. The celebration will be broadcast on PBS, also featuring fireworks and performances by Reba McEntire, Gladys Knight and others.

But that wasn’t the big news.

The big news is that David’s long-awaited new single, “Something ‘Bout Love,” will be released on his Web site July 13 and on iTunes July 20.

Members of David’s mobile hotline fan club can hear a one-minute snippet of the tune now by calling 801-386-8196. Or you can go here for a YouTube version of the snippet and David’s message to fans.

I say “long-awaited” because this is a single we were told might surface in April. And it will be featured on David’s new album, due for release later this year.

Fans, naturally, seem ecstatic over the news. The aforementioned YouTube clip — at least three versions have already been posted — already had more than 3,600 views as of noon Tuesday.

One fan has already posted the lyrics on the Snarky Archies fan site. And another fan writes on David’s Web site: “This song is very AWESOME! David don’t let me get crazy! I want buy your album now!”

Hmm, David fans just might have a shot at that Teen Choice Award for most fanatic fans.
