Lee DeWyze unveiled his first single on Ryan Seacrest’s radio program Wednesday.
But it wasn’t the first single everyone expected. That was supposed to be “Live It Up,” the title track off his post-Idol debut album, due out Nov. 16.
Instead, the song tabbed as Lee’s first single is “Sweet Serendipity,” and you can head to Lee’s website to hear it.
Lee told Ryan the song is about “running into good luck by accident” and that it’s “kind of how my whole life has been.”
As to why it was chosen as the first single for American Idol’s season nine champ, Lee simply said it’s a song that “stuck out” among a debut album that features what he called “a whole array of different sounds.”
Speaking of different, “Sweet Serendipity” is certainly a different sound for Lee compared to the pre-Idol “Slumberland” CD, which featured a more folksy sound well-suited to his husky voice.
“Sweet Serendipity” is more polished. It’s more pop-oriented. It’s somewhat reminiscent of Kris Allen’s first post-Idol single, the very mediocre “Live Like We’re Dying.”
It’s also less distinctive to my ear.
Will it work for Lee?
I guess time, sales and chart performance will provide the answer.
As for me, I prefer three or four of the tracks off “Slumberland,” including “Princess” and “Stay.”
I’m just hoping Lee’s pre-Idol sound hasn’t totally disappeared from the upcoming album.
Meanwhile, I hear “Sweet Serendipity” will be available for download beginning Oct. 26.
