Madilyn Paige turned two chairs on The Voice with her Season 6 audition. She joined Team Usher. (NBC Photo)
Her background: She’s one of five children and says “there’s constantly singing going on around the house.” Madilyn says she started singing to songs in movies. Her mom heard her and thought it was the radio. Soon after, she entered her first singing competition at age 12 and wound up finishing first in her age group. Another of her hobbies is making home movies.
On choosing Usher: “I think what really swayed me between Usher and Shakira was when Usher said that he was going to stick with me and he was going to be there by my side and help me in my career. And he also talked about helping me with my performance and that’s something that I’ve really been wanting to improve on.”
What the show didn’t show: Madelyn says she performed a very similar, slowed down version of “Titanium” at a school talent show and it got a great reaction, perhaps partly because “I don’t think my school knew that I could sing and so I think it was really shocking to everybody.” She prefers pop and singer-songwriter types of music. She has spent five years living in Japan during two different stints because of her father’s job. And The Voice discovered her through a video posted on one of her performances in a Vocal Sport competition.
Quote: “Originally, actually, I wanted Adam (as a coach), but obviously that wasn’t an option. So I think, honestly, once I was actually on the spot, I really didn’t care who it was as long as I got someone to turn.”
On iTunes: Just her audition song.
Update: She defeated Tanner James in the first battle round; they sang the Taylor Swift/Ed Sheeran duet, “Everything Has Changed.” In the second battle round, she was pitted against Bria Kelly, who turned four chairs in the blind audition. They sang “I’ll Stand by You” and Bria was declared the winner, but Madilyn was stolen by Blake Shelton, who used the final steal of Season 6 on her.
