An unlikely song choice produced unlikely results on night two of the battle round on The Voice Tuesday night.
Gwen Stefani decided to have reggae singer Menlik Zergabachew, 19, of Silver Spring, Md., and rock-pop singer Troy Ritchie, 21, of Trabuco Canyon, Calif., to sing Hall and Oates “Maneater.”
When the singing ended, she declared Troy the winner and the singer who would advance for her team.
But Menlik is still on the show as well. Both Adam Levine and Pharrell Williams tried to steal him. Menlik opted to join Team Pharrell.
During a conference call with the media Wednesday afternoon, Menlik said it’s “hard for me to explain the decisions I make on that stage. Once you get up there, it’s like a rush. Honestly, it just felt right. I listened to what both of them said. The vibe was just right (with Pharrell).”
Troy wasn’t surprised at the outcome. He said he sensed “a save was in the air.”
“Adam and Pharrell were super complimentary of both of us,” Troy said. “I was nervous, because I didn’t know who was going to win. But I felt confident a steal would happen.”
