See that thoughtful expression on Adam Levine’s face in the photo above?
You’re probably going to see lots of similar expressions tonight — heck, perhaps even ones of anguish — as The Voice coaches decide who to advance and who to leave behind in Season 7.
Twenty performers took the stage over the past two nights. If I were a coach, I could make an argument why nearly every one of them deserves another shot at the Season 7 crown.
Take Jean Kelley as Exhibit A. She’s a member of Team Pharrell and her performance of “Piano in the Dark” was fans’ least favorite among 10 songs performed last night.
But you know what?
That young lady was nothing short of fabulous the two rounds before that, going toe-to-toe with Sugar Joans on a sensational version of “Survivor;” then turning in a performance of Sia’s “Chandelier” that was Voice fans’ favorite from the final night of the knockout rounds.
The result: There are a lucky few singers — Matt McAndrew, Luke Wade, Anita Antoinette — who can head into tonight’s results show pretty confident they’ll advance to the Top 12.
That leaves 17 other talented performers wondering whether they’ll be voted through by fans. And, if not, whether they’ll be saved by their respective coach.
For my predictions on who advances and who doesn’t follow these links: Team Gwen, Team Blake, Team Pharrell, Team Adam.
And for a look at where the artists landed on iTunes when today’s voting ended, head here.
It’s results time, folks, but first we’re going to get a group number from Team Blake. Wow, they sound really good together. That performance reinforced my belief that I’d advance Jessie Pitts, Reagan James and Craig Wayne Boyd to the finals. Very, very nicely done.
Now, some results:
Team Blake
1. Reagan James: Excellent choice voters, a potential winner for sure.
2. Craig Wayne Boyd: Another wise choice. He’s been fabulous.
3. Jessie Pitts: She’s Blake’s pick. Surprises me a bit, but it’s the choice I would have made. She has such a unique voice.
Eliminated: James David Carter, Taylor Brashears.
Team Pharrell
1. Luke Wade: Not surprising. He’s been the front-runner on this team since early in the show.
2. DaNica Shirey: Way to go, DaNica. Wow, I thought she might need Pharrell’s save.
3. Sugar Joans: Well deserved after her performance last night, but I really hate to see Jean leave the show.
Eliminated: Jean Kelley, Elyjuh Rene
Hey, I really, really liked that group performance by the members of Team Gwen. This group has impressed me the most compared to my expectations.
Team Gwen
1. Taylor John Williams: I get a sense Voice fans are falling in love with this guy. Not surprised.
2. Anita Antoinette: Another deserving singer advancing. Expecting her to do very well in the finals.
3. Ryan Sill: That’s my first surprise of the night, though I honestly thought all three of the singers still on stage did very well last night. Ryan sang first Tuesday and survived!
Eliminated: Ricky Manning and Bryana Salaz
Team Adam
1. Damien: After that emotional performance Monday night, he definitely deserved to advance.
2. Matt McAndrew: Another potential winner. He’s that good.
3. Chris Jamison: OK, that’s my second surprise of the night. I was pretty sure he’d select Taylor.
Eliminated: Taylor Phelan and Mia Pfirrman
I’ll be back with a photo gallery.
And somehow, some way, I’m going to rank the Top 12 between now and Monday.
