It’s not enough to download your favorite’s music. You’d also better vote. As often as possible.
Exhibit A: Emily Ann Roberts cracked the Top 10 on iTunes, meaning her iTunes downloads were multiplied by 10 and added to her vote total. Yet she still needed a coach’s save to advance to the Top 12.
Exhibit B: Amy Vachal cracked the Top 30 on iTunes, easily the second best chart performance on Team Adam. But Shelby Brown beat her out in fan voting. Like Emily Ann, Amy had to rely on a coach’s save to advance.
Some other random notes from the results show …
1. They returned and went right back home. I’m talking about the coaches’ comeback artists of course — Nadjah Nicole for Team Blake, Chance Pena for Team Adam, Ellie Lawrence for Team Gwen and Celeste Betton for Team Pharrell. It was a nice little twist for The Voice, but meant nothing in the end. Ellie and Celeste posted the second best performing songs on iTunes for their teams, yet were passed over when it came time to dole out saves.
2. Gwen Stefani is trying to become the first female coach to win The Voice. I won’t say it won’t happen, but the odds are pretty steep against it. Her remaining three singers turned a total of four chairs in the blind auditions. Along the way, Gwen has cast aside two four-chair turns (Viktor Kiraly and Lyndsey Elm) and a three-chair-turn recipient (Ellie) twice. No singer has won The Voice after turning one chair, like Korin Bukowski and Jeffery Austin did in their blind auditions. And Gwen’s remaining two-chair turn is her weakest performer.
3. That said, the save for Korin was the feel-good moment of Wednesday’s results show. Personally, I’m thrilled to see her get another chance. She was brilliant in the battle and knockout rounds, but clearly didn’t seem comfortable with her live playoff song. And did you see how shocked she was to get the save? Her message to fans on Twitter: “What is HAPPENING?! Thank you for all your love and support! I’m sorry I fell and cried in your faces.”
4. Adam Levine was thrilled to lure young country singer Shelby Brown away from Team Blake in the blind auditions. Now she’ll get to go head-to-head with three country artists from Team Blake in the finals. That’s right — four country singers in the final 12. That’s partly a testament to how well country artists have done on the show in recent seasons.
5. Season 9 started off with a near record number of minors advancing from the blind auditions and a record number of four- chair turns. Five minors remain — Braiden Sunshine, Madi Davis, Zach Seabaugh, Emily Ann and Shelby. And five singers who turned four chairs also remain — Mark Hood, Evan McKeel, Jordan (“The Show So Obviously Wants Him to Win”) Smith, Barrett Baber and Shelby.
