Meet and hear more from Adam Wakefield of The Voice Season 10

His audition: Adam Wakefield, 33, originally of Hanover, New Hampshire, covered George Jones’ “Tennessee Whiskey” for his blind audition. His unique tone prompted an almost immediate chair turn from Adam Levine. Blake Shelton turned when Adam hit the chorus. Blake said it’s artists like Wakefield that make him excited about the future of country music. Adam opted to join Team Blake.

His background: Adam says his family didn’t have a whole lot of money as he was growing up. But his parents had records and a piano and his dad was into the blues “so music was always a big part of our lives.” He wound up forming a band with his brother and moving to Baltimore where they worked for a construction company when they weren’t performing. Meanwhile, his brother struggled with mental health problems and wound up dying of a drug overdose. That left Adam struggling with the band and the loss of his brother. He credits his girlfriend Jenny for steering him away from self-destructive behavior and toward Nashville, where he’s now making a living at music. He performs with country singer Chris Cagle and has a bluegrass band. He said he also leans toward an older, southern rock sound.

What the show didn’t show:

Adam and his brother John helped form the band Old Man Brown in 2001 and wrote most of the group’s music.

The band moved to Baltimore to start performing in the Maryland-D.C. area and wound up releasing three albums, including “The Return” (2007), “Blue Light Special” (2010) and “Brand Me Immoral” (2010), all of which are available on iTunes.

The first album was produced by Johnny Neel of the Allman Brothers in Nashville. By the time “Brand Me Immoral” was released, Adam said the band’s sound “is slowly heading south, more of a New Orleans vibe.”

Adam now performs with a band called The Copperhaeads. performing a mix of bluegrass, folk and rootsy soul.

That band also includes Lauren Saks on fiddle and vocals, Caleb Edwards on mandolin and vocals, Michael Pisculli on upright bass and Brad Bulla on banjo.

The Copperheads formed in the summer of 2014. Last year, they launched a successful Kickstarter campaign to fund a debut album, looking to “carve a new niche in the history of bluegrass and Americana music.”
