Then again, why should he limit himself?
Fleming, from Baltimore, Md., was 25 when he auditioned and landed spot on Team Jennifer Hudson.
He was the last original member of Team JHUD standing in the competition.
And over the course of the show, he charted on the Christian, pop and R&B/soul charts on iTunes.
In fact, he topped the R&B chart three times.
“I don’t want to be limited,” Davon said during a Wednesday conference call with the media. “I would hate to be limited to just one type of music.
“But as far as musically, I definitely want to stay to my roots, you know — the pop soul with a twist of gospel in there, absolutely.”
“No matter what I sing, I believe that you will feel my soul in it. And the biggest thing is to continue to inspire people. I did this show because I wanted to be an inspiration and a light to show them to follow your dreams.”
A worship leader prior to his time on the show, Davon said he’d also like to expand his brand to include acting, hosting and commercials.
Davon said his favorite performance in the competition was his last — singing “Gravity” by John Mayer — in part because it followed a series of performances in which he covered songs made famous by female R&B divas.
It also followed a week in which he’d landed in the bottom two in the voting for the first time. Davon said he felt a need to redeem himself. “Gravity” offered that chance. And even though he wound up being eliminated, the song put him at number one on the iTunes R&B chart once again.
“It lit a fire up under my butt,” he said of the previous week’s performance. “I definitely wanted to show the world that I could perform a male song and still make it my own, make it successful. And if I had to go home, I’m so glad that it was with that performance.”
“I came into this competition, you know, homeless, trying to figure out what I was going to do with my life, what I wanted to be,” he added. “To come into this competition and see my life completely change before my eyes is more gratifying than anything in the world.”
